Your Account Policy
Computer Accounts are managed centrally
- Computer accounts for access to major college computer resources are managed and administered centrally by the Office of Computing Services.
Account are for college business.
- Computer accounts are granted to Adams State College (ASC) faculty, staff, and students for bona fide purposes related to their work or studies at the college. The state of Colorado Fiscal Rule forbids use of State equipment or resources for private purposes. Therefore, use of college computer accounts, computer and communications equipment, software, and networks for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. Incidental personal usage not related to College business is permitted, provided it does not materially interfere with the availability of services for College purposes.
Accounts are not to be shared.
- Generally, only one person is authorized to use any particular account, although some individuals may own more than one account. The account owner is responsible for all use of the account. Each person should use only those computer accounts that have been created for his/her use. The negligence of another user in revealing an account name and password is not considered authorization for use. Account owners should make appropriate use of the system protection features (such as regularly changing passwords and maintaining confidentiality of passwords) and should take precautions against others obtaining access to their computer resources. Computer accounts should not be shared.
Password Security
- A primary security mechanism protecting the contents of a computer account is the password. Account owners are responsible for maintaining the passwords for their accounts. Account owners should avoid choosing passwords that might be easily guessed by others. Computing Services may require account owners to change their password if there is reason to believe that a particular password has been, or may easily be, compromised. Lost (forgotten) passwords are restored only upon certain verification of identity.
Student Accounts
- Once a student has been admitted to ASC, has signed up for class(es) and has paid the fees, the system automatically creates the student's accounts. The account creation can take up to 24 hours to be processed. The student must sign up for classes manually the first semester; afterwards, the student can register for classes on-line. The student will have accounts to access: campus email, the campus network and modem pool, and the "open access" computer labs. Students receive their username, password and email address by going to one of the open access labs and entering getit as a username (no password). They are prompted to enter their student ID (usually the Social Security Number SSN) and their date of birth. They are then prompted to read and comply with the "ASC Acceptable Use Policy", specifying the conditions under which the account is granted. Student accounts remain activated, unless the student graduates or withdraws from the school. If the student is registered for spring semester, the account remains active during One week before the beginning of fall semester, Computing Services removes ALL student accounts to do a once-a-year "house cleaning". This includes files on the home directory (N: Drive on server Bross) and files on student.adams.edu (Web and Email files) We then recreate all accounts for all currently enrolled students. Students are required to run getit once a year at the beginning of fall semester. Note: Be sure to backup your data before the "house cleaning".
