School violence topic of next ASC free faculty lecture (09-29-08)

Adams State College Adjunct Professor of Sociology Marianna King has expertise in creating and evaluating youth violence and school violence prevention programs. Her lecture, "School Violence - What's Going On?" begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Porter Hall (the science building) room 130.

According to King, although school bullying has been with us for a long time, its prevalence and severity have grown during the past several decades. Correspondingly, school shootings have increased during this time. "Typically, school violence is explained and addressed from a psychological perspective, which is limited and which obviously is not sufficient to adequately address the problem," King said. Her lecture explores the culture of school violence from a sociological perspective, which offers a deeper and broader understanding of the nature of the problem and its solution.

In addition to discussing the deeply rooted problem of school violence, the lecture will present methods to address this problem and ways to adequately evaluate school violence programs.

The Adams State College Faculty Lecture Series for the fall 2008 semester includes unique speakers, addressing a variety of topics. The free lectures continue throughout the semester.

All talks are free and the public is invited. Complimentary light refreshments will be offered. For further information on the series of lectures, contact Dr. Robert Astalos, assistant professor of physics, at 719-587-7821, or by email: rjastalos@adams.edu.
