Fifteen ASC Business students receive Wall, Smith, Bateman Scholarships (11-28-07)

Wall, Smith, Bateman, and Associates Inc. awarded accounting scholarships to the following Adams State College students, Matthew Andrade, Lori Austin, Jessica Bogner, Samuel Buchman, Tanya Cash, Kale Davis, Dustin Gjellum, Sophia Griego, April Gutjahr, Pete Quintana, Melissa Romero, Andrea Salazar, Matthew Semsack, Leslie Widger, and Marcia Worz.

"This is the second year I've been awarded the scholarship," Semsack said. "It has helped me financially with college expenses."

Wall, Smith, Bateman, and Associates Inc. current shareholders Lyle Hood, Ron Chapman, Mike Hudson, David Young, Bob Gjellum, and Karla Willschau, continue to support Adams State College with the same spirit as the firm's founders. Every year WSB awards approximately a dozen scholarships to accounting students at Adams State College.

The accounting firm has been awarding scholarships since 1982; the average number of recipients per year is eight with approximately 200 scholarships awarded in the last 25 years.

Many Adams State students have worked for the firm as interns. "We have expanded the program in terms of the number of students working as interns in our office," Larry A. Pochardt, WSB firm administrator, said. "Our firm supports Adams State's School of Business accounting program including the financial support of scholarships and the number of jobs we offer to graduating seniors, and the internships offered."

Davis, a junior majoring in accounting, is currently working as an intern in the WSB office. "The internship is good experience for when I graduate from college," he said. "The scholarship has helped me avoid taking out loans."

Dr. Kurt Keiser, chair School of Business, said the WSB scholarships provide a tremendous service to the students.

"The accounting program is one of the strongest programs in the School of Business," Keiser said. "Over the years, our outstanding faculty have done an amazing job developing the program and fostering a vital linkage with Wall, Smith, and Bateman. Through their generous scholarship support and internship opportunities, Wall, Smith, and Bateman has played an integral role in the success of the accounting program. The School of Business and the college are indebted to Wall, Smith, and Bateman."
