ASC plans grand concerts with concert grand (11-17-05)

Adams State College music professor William Lipke, left, and music students Tara Stradley, Rachel Trafton, Carlene Valdez and Michelle Chavez enjoy the department's new Steinway concert grand piano

The Adams State Department of Music celebrated the arrival of its new Steinway concert grand piano Nov. 15. "As the cultural center of the Valley, it's nice to have such an instrument," said music professor, Dr. William Lipke.

The department was able to purchase the piano with contributions from private donors and a grant from the King Foundation in Denver.

"The students are excited to be able to perform on this quality of an instrument," Lipke said. "They took to it right away, playing Chopin, Liszt and Mozart." Steinway concert grand pianos are widely used in concert halls and by symphonies across the world.

"Steinways are handmade by the best craftsmen, and they're designed to create a beautiful singing tone," Lipke said.

The dealer sent Lipke to select this the piano at the Steinway factory in New York City, so it would be a perfect fit for Adams State's Leon Concert Hall.

Lipke said the public will be able to hear the new piano during the next recital, which will be scheduled in January.
