Valley teachers take energy coursework (06-17-08)

Seven San Luis Valley teachers took part in the first energy course for educators ever sponsored by the Governor's Energy Office. It was held during the annual conference of the Colorado Renewable Energy Society on June 6 in Pueblo. Course credit was offered through Adams State College.
Twenty-two teachers from all over the state met at the Colorado State University - Pueblo Campus to learn how to model best teaching practice in science education and energy concepts through the course taught by Dr. Nancy Kellogg and Dr. Mary Gromko.
All seven of the valley teachers, along with eight others, received full scholarships for the course, thanks to the work of volunteer coordinator, Mary Carhartt, who owns GrassRoots Energy Farm in Mosca with her husband.
"The Valley teachers were superb," stated Carhartt. "They showed great enthusiasm for the course, particularly the solar components and the investigation model for teaching. We hope to work with more valley teachers in the future. All students need to have access to these very important ideas about energy."
Teachers who attended were Lisa Abeyta of Antonito, Anrahyah Anstad of Crestone, Helen Vessels of San Luis, Sheryl Josselyn of Monte Vista, Diego Martinez and Donna McDonald of Alamosa and Mary Carhartt of Mosca.
