ASC hosts free conference on global warming (01-16-08)

In spite of the cold weather in Alamosa this winter, scientific predictions of global warming has encouraged Adams State faculty and staff to join dozens of educational institutions across the country to participate in "Focus the Nation," a non-partisan, nonprofit organization that does not advocate specific policies.

The purpose of this national event is to address environmental issues, including climate change, and call for a clear plan of action. The evening and day's events are free and open to the public.

The Webcast, "The 2% Solution," will kick-off the event from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the School of Business room 142. This national, live, interactive Webcast includes Stanford University climate scientist, Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins, green jobs pioneer Van Jones and youth climate leaders, who will lead a discussion of global warming solutions.

The following day will involve discussions led by scholars, government officials and community activists. Natural resource presentations ranging from the global to the local levels will be held from 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Carson Auditorium including Dr. Mari Centeno, assistant professor of government, "Environment and International Security;" Christine Canaly, of the SLV Ecosystem Council, "Overview of Local Environmental Issues: Choices that will impact Us Locally;" Citizens for SLV Water; Marie Zanowick, "EPA San Luis Valley Sustainability Project;" and Dr. Maria Valdez "Solar Energy and Solar Job Grow Potential."

ASC Community Partnerships and a multi-disciplinary Adams State faculty team are coordinating this event. For more information call ASC Community Partnerships at 719-587-7372. If you would like more information about the nationwide event, please visit: focusthenation.org
