ASC forum addresses censorship in Alamosa (12-05-07)
Philip Pullman's book, "The Golden Compass," has been removed from the Ortega Middle School library. The Adams State College Fahrenheit 451 Project, part of the National Endowment for the Art's Big Read, is organizing a forum, Protecting our Youth or An Act of Censorship: A Community Forum, with featured guests to discuss the removal of the book the from the public school's library. The forum begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10 in the Adams State Theatre.
The forum will include Adams State theater students reading from scenes in the book and is free and open to the public - come let your voice be heard.
Dr. John Taylor, associate professor of theater, is the director of the Adams State Fahrenheit 451 Project. He said: "This will be a forum and not a debate. In connection with the Adams State Fahrenheit 451 Project, we have the perfect opportunity to discuss the role of books in our schools, the nature of censorship in a free society, and our responsibility to our children."
