"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them." ~ Ray Bradbury
The Big Read/Fahrenheit 451 Project successfully brought together ASC Students, High School Students, community members, the artistic community, ASC faculty and K-12 teachers and many others to remind all of us about the importance of free speech in a democratic society and the special place that the written word plays in free thought and debate. Books and the free exchange of ideas are at the core of what college should be about. This is one role that a College or University should always assume--to steward and champion the rights that some are all too willing to surrender to avoid uncomfortable ideas or to gain a greater feeling of safety. In my 23 years at ASC, this project is the most successful such effort in which I have witnessed.
