Preparation Program (EETPP) - Elementary Education
The bachelor's degree program in Interdisciplinary Studies with Licensure in Middle Childhood Education (elementary education) is designed for students planning to enter the teaching profession. The program is designed to meet the requirements of HB 154 and the Colorado Department of Education content standards.
Adams State's School of Education has long been recognized as one of Colorado's foremost training institution for teachers. Many ASC graduates were named winners of the coveted Milken Awards. The National Council for Teacher Education accredits Adams State's education programs for Teacher Education and the Colorado Department of Education.
Bachelor of Arts Degree and Teacher Licensure
Adams State College has redesignated its teacher education programs to meet the new statutory requirements, including the ability of a student to complete the graduation requirements in four academic years and 800 hours of field experience.
The Department of Teacher Education provides programs leading to Colorado licensure in elementary education. The bachelor's program and the licensure programs focus on the preparation of teachers for the Provisional Teaching Licensure. Students desiring licensure must move through three distinct phases in their academic and professional preparation. First, they must have completed, or be currently enrolled in, a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. Second, they must be admitted to and successfully complete, the Professional Education Program. Third, they must be admitted to, and successfully complete, the student teaching semester. Candidates for an elementary license must meet the requirements in the current plan of study. Courses are taken within the Department of Teacher Education and in content fields to provide a balance of professional education and general content knowledge. While it is the responsibility of the student to insure that all requirements for a degree and licensure are met, students are encouraged to seek out the advice of faculty advisors.
All students seeking a license to teach will be involved in departmental program assessment. The Department assesses professional growth with qualitative and quantitative data derived from the professional program admission process, the student teacher admission and screening process, and the Colorado assessment examinations. Passage of the PLACE or PRAXIS II assessment examination is required prior to participation in the student teaching semester and consideration for recommendation for a Colorado license.
The Department of Teacher Education seeks students with professional potential. Selection to the program is based on academic proficiency, a record of competence, and personal suitability.
Evaluation of students' performance and professional potential will be an ongoing process throughout the program. Retention and exit requirements are based on multiple criteria: (1) 2.75 cumulative GPA, (2) satisfactory completion of required course work, (3) passage of required PLACE or PRAXIS II examination (4) demonstration of professional proficiency, (5) demonstration of disposition for teaching in schools, and (6) faculty recommendation. The faculty reserves the right to place on probation or to require withdrawal from the program any student who, in their professional judgment, fails to satisfy requirements of scholarship, performance, academic and professional ethics, or personal suitability.
