Important rural programs launched at Adams State (06-25-07)
Adams State's School of Business unveiled two new programs designed to further serve the needs of rural areas.
F.A.R.M.@ASC is a bachelor's degree program designed to prepare students for careers in business positions related to agriculture, food production, agri-business, and rural-associated sectors of the economy.
Students will learn management, marketing, and financial skills to succeed in rural business environments.
"Local agriculture and Adams State have established a partnership for the benefit of the farmers and students in the San Luis Valley," said business professor Richard Vallone.
Vallone said the program will fill a future need for the country, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates many more agribusiness careers are available than there are qualified people to fill them. Vallone said the shortage will be greatest for managers, financial specialists, and marketing and sales representatives.
The department will also offer a bachelor of science in health care administration, which will consist of the traditional business core courses plus 30 hours in health care administration courses.
"Health care is America's fastest growing industry in dollars and jobs," said business professor Ed Lyell. "Managing this industry, especially in rural settings, requires many more people with leadership, budgeting, management, marketing, information systems, and economic skills."
