First Rowley Scholarship recipient now works for honoree's son (06-25-07)
While many scholarship donors receive thank-you notes from students currently benefiting from the financial assistance, contact does not usually continue after graduation. However, Jacqueline Blueitt '94, '03, the first recipient of the Rowley Grant, gets a chance to thank a benefactor every day. She is the professional school counselor at Ellicott High School, the same school where Jon Rowley '80, '86 is principal.
The Rowley Grant was established to honor the memory of Jon's father, former Adams State education professor, Dr. Philip Rowley. Family and friends of Dr. Rowley established the grant. Dr. Rowley worked for Adams State College from 1966 until his retirement in 1987.
Blueitt said the scholarship allowed her to focus completely on her student teaching experience at Rocky Ford High School.
"The support and encouragement I received to apply for the Rowley Scholarship has carried over in my counseling career," she said. "I encourage students to apply for every scholarship available."
"Jacqueline came to Ellicott and has done a fabulous job," Rowley said. "She is very proficient in assisting students and in organizing the counseling program. In the short span of the year, she has made a very positive impact on the school. She is an advocate for the students and a high-quality representative of the school district. Not a huge surprise, considering she is an Adams State College graduate."
Her duties at Ellicott include individual and group counseling, college/career preparation, assistance filling out college/scholarship applications, setting up college representative visits, taking students on college visits, and administration of state and local assessments that include: PLAN, PSAT, ACT, and CSAP. She was also the head volleyball coach this past season.
It was serendipitous for Blueitt to be hired by the son of Dr. Rowley.
"Working for Jon has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in education," she said. "His priority is the students at Ellicott High School, and he is an advocate for school counseling."
Both Rowley and Blueitt are recent hires for the Ellicott School District.
"Jon and I talk daily about changes that need to happen within the counseling department," she said. "We envision the same things for EHS and the steps we need to take in order to get there. The best thing about working with Jon is that we get to share stories about ASC."
