Visiting Instructor of Developmental Reading and Writing

Start Date: August 2008
Position Description:
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Teach four sections of developmental reading/writing in fall and spring semesters, with the possibility of teaching occasional courses in freshman composition depending on enrollment distributions
- Conduct placement assessments for students entering assigned sections of developmental reading/writing
- Assist Developmental Education director in coordinating learning assistance activities as appropriate for each student
- Meet regularly with peer tutors assigned to developmental reading/writing students
- Assist Developmental Education director in intervening with students not succeeding in assigned developmental reading/writing courses
- Assist Developmental Education director in assessing appropriateness of and in innovating the developmental reading/writing curriculum
- Serve on the Developmental Education committee
- Participate in English Department composition meetings at the discretion of English department chair
The Developmental Reading/Writing Instructor is accountable to the Developmental Education director.
Qualifications:
- M.A. in English, Education, or related field required.
- Teaching experience required.
- Experience with reading and writing diagnosis and remediation preferred.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development preferred.
- Evidence of professional collaboration, including instructional teams, preferred.
- Ability to work with students from diverse background strongly preferred.
- Ability to advocate enthusiastically on behalf of developmental students preferred.
- Strong communication skills required.
- Strong computer skills preferred.
- Ability to perform above position description.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary range is $30,000 - $32,000. Adams State College offers an excellent benefits package.
