Accomplishments

Armando Valdez, assistant professor of business, will present fourth Adams State College Faculty Lecture, "Improving Access to Health Care," at 7 p.m. Wed., March 26 in Porter Hall (the science building) room 130.

Richard Vallone and Armando Valdez, assistant professors of business, will participate in the Medical Group Managers Association summer Fellowship in Academic Programs for experienced faculty in an academic setting. Vallone is director of ASC's Health Care Administration program.

Dr. Joel Shults, Director of Public Safety, was selected from among law enforcement executives around the country to attend the National Law Enforcement Leadership Institute on Violence Against Women in San Francisco, CA, this May. The initiative is a partnership between the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the US Department of Justice. Shults was selected in a competitive process for complete sponsorship by the IACP which will be funding the travel and costs of the conference. Shults also attended federal certification courses in the National Incident Management System. The course is required of emergency managers to operate within guidelines and procedures set by the US Department of Homeland Security.

Dr. Joel Shults, Director of Public Safety, and DPS Officer Alycia Riggs attended a seminar on Identify Theft Investigation presented by Investigators from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in Colorado Springs in February.

Johnny Romero, DPS Officer, attended a course on identification of IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) conducted in Canon City in February.

Dave Wreford, adjunct instructor of English, won first place for Best Humorous Column in the 2007 Colorado Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, for his column, "Green pigs and grapefruit." He writes a regular column for Valley Courier, which received four additional awards at the CPA's annual convention in Denver, March 1. Assistant professors of business, Richard Vallone and Armando Valdez, will attend the Medical Group Managers Association's summer fellowship in Academic Programs for experienced faculty in an academic setting. Vallone oversees Adams State's Health Care Administration program.

Dr. Richard Goddard, History, Government & Philosophy, and students from his historical reenactment class participated in four Civil War battle reenactments at Socorro, New Mexico, Feb. 29 - March 2. The students, Melissa Shipp, Mallori Shortridge, Simon Dilts, and Brendan Pichon, are members of the Fort Garland Memorial Battery, an artillery unit that operates a mountain howitzer. The event is staged to commemorate the Battle of Valverde which took place a little south of Socorro in February 1862. In that year, a group of Confederates from Texas, under the command of General Sibley, attempted to move north along the Rio Grande to capture New Mexico and Colorado. Although the Confederates won the battle of Valverde, they were stopped a few months later at the Battle of Glorietta Pass. Unfortunately Major Goddard was killed in the battle, but Dr. Goddard and all of his troops returned safely to ASC with a much greater understanding of the conditions of 19th century warfare than could have been gained in a classroom.
