Heroes among us (06-04-08)
An Adams State employee and two students were honored at the recent Breakfast of Champions, presented by the San Luis Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. Twenty-seven community members were recognized, from Red Cross trainees who used their skills in the event of an emergency, to trained volunteers and civil servants who have dedicated their lives to saving others, to regular people who happened to be in the right place at the right time and didn't hesitate. The ASC heroes fall into the latter category.
During the spring semester, Custodial Supervisor Randy Gutierrez encountered a student choking on a sucker in Richardson Hall. He was able to help her clear the obstruction.
Students Kurt Senff and Jake Garner were first on the scene at a late-night chimney fire on Sierra Dr. in late February. After calling the fire department, the two knocked on the home's door to alert the resident, who was able to extinguish the fire by closing the fireplace damper. The two remained at the scene until police and fire firefighters arrived. Ironically, Jake said that his mother's house burned in a chimney fire when she was a child.
All three heroes were nominated by Adams State College Public Safety Officer Tresa Rupright.
