Public Safety now Adams State College Police Department (06-04-08)
In light of the department's 40th anniversary and in recognition of the important role of having certified police officers serving the campus community, ASC's Public Safety Department will become the Adams State College Police Department, effective July 1.
The name change reflects Chief Joel Shults' desire that his department be clearly identified as a police agency to avoid the confusion associated with images of unarmed security guards.
"Our officers are fully certified and empowered peace officers with jurisdiction on and off campus," he said
ASC police officers completed an average of more than 120 hours of training each during the past fiscal year. Each officer attended training in leadership, officer survival, incident management, anti-bias policing, DNA evidence processing, firearms qualification, and active shooter. Individual officers have attended courses on instructor certification, explosives, use of force, domestic violence, identity theft, warrants, interrogation, and other topics. Officers have added internet-based training to their schedules, as well as site based training. The ASC PD is a partner with the San Luis Valley Law Enforcement Training Foundation.
Shults plans for the department to produce its own training materials using digital media in the near future.
