Accomplishments

Dr. Juan Gonzalez, associate professor of Spanish, was named KRZA's January Volunteer of the Month. In the past year, identifying himself simply as "Gonzalez," he has hosted Saturday morning's "Ballads and Bluegrass," the classical show on weekday afternoons, "Monday Morning Mix-up," Friday night's "Rock 'n Roll Renaissance," Tuesday morning's "Latin Jazz," and late night's "The Last Gasp," in addition to his regular slot on La Buena Onda. He has quickly become a favorite with the community radio station's listeners, regardless of the genre of music that he's playing.

In addition to being an outstanding D.J., Juan serves on KRZA's Cultural Programming Committee and has been a tremendous help during recent fund drives, according to station manager, Kristine Taylor. To hear Gonzalez, tune in to KRZA 88.7 FM on Monday nights, and the first two Wednesdays of the month, from 8-10 p.m.

Dr. Richard Goddard, assistant professor of social studies, joined two of his summer field school students, Breann Speicher ASC '07, and Delfin Weis of Cambridge University for presentations at the annual conference of the Society for Historical Archaeology, held recently in Albuquerque. The theme of this year's conference was "The Public Benefits of Historical Archaeology." Since Dr. Goddard's work at historic Fort Garland has a strong public emphasis, it was an opportunity to promote both the archaeological field school and Adams State College.

Goddard and Speicher co-presented a paper entitled "Some of Our Public are Dead." Goddard, Speicher, and Weis cooperated in presenting a poster session for conference attendees and a display, which was open to the public.

As an alternate way of studying the past, Dr. Goddard formed a living history/historical reenactment group, the Adams State College - Fort Garland Memorial Battery. Starting this semester, he is also offering a one-credit enrichment course for those interested in pursuing these activities. The Fort Garland Memorial Battery is a Civil War artillery unit open to all interested parties.
