Let the building begin (04-29-08)
The Capital Fee Facilities Committee expects to break ground on one major construction project by next spring, according to Erik van de Boogaard, associate vice president of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction. The group has begun to plan $35 million worth of construction and renovation projects supported by a new capital fee approved by student vote in March. Van de Boogaard said the major projects should be completed within the next 3-5 years.
- The program plan for renovating the ES building is underway.
- Work has begun to identify an architect to develop an overall master plan for housing and the recreation/athletic field.
- Plans include installing as astro-turf field in Rex Stadium.
- Near term projects include hiring a program consultant for the Music building, replacing Leon Memorial seating, and demolishing the 4-plex, Casa del Sol, and possibly radio station buildings.
Vice President for Finance and Administration Bill Mansheim, said, "In campus meetings last year, students told us loud and clear campus housing needed to be updated. By approving this fee, students have given us a mandate to move forward. This will be one of the most significant building efforts on campus since the 1960s."
Van de Boogaard said architectural sketches will be displayed in the SUB as work and planning progress.
