Dr. Douglas Camp, Assistant Professor of Music
Douglas Camp grew up in the small town of Sheridan, Arkansas, where his first musical experiences began in the public school band program. He was an enthusiastic music student who enjoyed performing on the trombone, euphonium and tuba.
At Adams State College, Douglas Camp directs the Jazz Studies Program, teaches brass instruction, Brass Methods, Introduction to Jazz, Introduction to Music Liturature and directs the ASC Jazz Ensemble and Combos. He also is the director of the ASC annual Jazz Festival and faculty sponsor of the ASC IAJE Student Chapter.
Dr. Camp has taught instrumental music in the public schools of Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico and has been a frequent adjudicator at many instrumental competitions. He has been a freelance performer in Little Rock, Santa Fe, Tucson, Dallas and Ft. Worth including: the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Texas Wind Symphony and the Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band.He is also a founding member of the "Music from Greer" chamber music festival.
He earned the Bachelor of Music in Education from Henderson State University and a Master of Music degree at Southern Methodist University. While at SMU, he was awarded a prestigious Meadows Dean's scholarship and was a teaching assistant in wind band conducting. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trombone performance from the University of Arizona. At the University of Arizona he directed the trombone choir, the Studio Jazz Ensemble II and coordinated the jazz combos program. He also taught applied trombone and brass teaching methods at the University of Arizona.
Besides his many musical activities, he is a master fly-tier and has worked as a licensed fly fishing guide.
